Listen to an Academic Talk: lectures made manageable
A short lecture or part of a class on an academic topic, followed by four questions about the main idea, key details, how an example is used and what the speaker implies.
Format
- One speaker, about 2 minutes, heard once.
- Four multiple-choice questions.
- Two talks in each module in this practice format.
Strategy
- Use a two-column page: main points on the left, examples on the right.
- Signal words matter: 'The key point is…', 'For example…', 'However…', 'So…'.
- When the speaker gives an example, write what it is an example of.
Common traps
- Options that restate an example as if it were the main idea.
- Details the speaker mentions and then rejects.
