Build a Sentence: word order made easy
You see a question or statement and a set of words and short phrases. You put them in order to build a correct and appropriate reply. It tests grammar: word order, questions, verb forms and prepositions.
Format
- Ten sentences in about six minutes.
- Some words are already in place at the start or end.
- One extra word may be left over as a distractor.
Strategy
- Find the subject and the main verb first.
- For questions, check the auxiliary position: 'Did you…', 'Is it…', 'Should I…'.
- Place time and place phrases at the end unless the sentence starts with them.
- Read the finished sentence as a reply to the prompt — does it answer it?
Common traps
- Using the distractor word because it looks familiar.
- Putting adverbs of frequency after the main verb.
- Question word order in an indirect question ('Do you know where it is?').
